Speak up Be heard: Professional development
Professional Certifications
What is ASU's policy on paying for employees to get or renew professional certification required or by their position? The Zoom and Career EDGE and LinkedIn Learning are of poor quality and do not reach the educational requirements set forth by these professional organizations.
Thank you for your question. Developing professional growth plans, maintaining certifications, as well as requests for funding those plans should be incorporated into regular EDGE conversations so supervisors can effectively manage professional development budgets for their teams. With that said, there is no current policy that indicates a funding requirement to maintain certifications or professional development. Per SPP 601: Release Time for Professional Career Development/Learning/Mentorship: The university supports the professional development and growth of all employees. Accordingly, all full-time benefits-eligible employees are eligible for 24 hours of release time per year for professional development. Fees for classes are not automatically reimbursed. Departments are encouraged to fund supervisor-approved professional development opportunities for employees. https://public.powerdms.com/ASU/documents/1560453 Please consult with your supervisor and/or your department HR Liaison if you need further guidance.
Additional Professional Development Opportunities
I explored my options for QTR and although it is a great perk, it is still costly out-of-pocket. That being said, I'm looking into Certificate options to continue my professional growth and development. I would like to see a professional development stipend or scholarship opportunity to pursue other professional growth certificates and options outside of our system. In my previous roles from other employers, they offered a stipend for professional growth.
From HR: Thank you for your question. The Employee Reduced Resident Tuition is a valuable benefit provided to eligible employees and their dependents who wish to pursue further education within the Tri-University Education System. Certifications or Professional Development Programs outside the tri-university system are not covered, and individuals are not eligible for stipends or scholarships in these cases. For those interested in such external opportunities, I recommend reaching out to your supervisor to explore additional avenues for professional development. They may be able to provide guidance or suggest alternative resources to support your growth outside the scope of the current benefit offerings.
From Staff Council: Staff Council also offers a Judy Reynolds Scholarship opportunity, for benefits-eligible employees who have been employed for at least one year. There are specific criteria and an application is needed to apply, please check their website, for further information. Awards are typically in the $600.00 range.
